Storyline
Announcement
In a far-flung part of the Alpha Quadrant, a strange melody can be heard. Ever since the appearance of that sound, anyone who visits the area has begun to experience an array of maladies. Investigate the sound and uncover the truth behind its impacts. [1]
Prologue
- Lieutenant Ogawa: "I realize it's probably unusual getting a distress call out here, but our situation is desperate - and strange. We were dispatched to assist crews that have been incapacitated."
- Lieutenant Ogawa: "An unfamiliar sound echoed throughout the ship and immediately after, the computers began to malfunction and, frankly, so did the crew members' bodies. We've stabilized them, but..."
- Commander Uhura: "...but who knows how long until the same happens to us. We've analyzed the sound - or tried. It's just as destructive as Ogawa says. I'm hesitant to even move the rescue crew at this point.""
- Commander Uhura: "Which is where you come in, Captain: I've heard good things about you from Starfleet and it's time to show us what you've got. Find out what this sound is and how to deal with it.""
Intermission
- Commander Uhura: "Good work, Captain. Though I don’t believe I’ve seen anything like this in all my years as a communications officer. If your research is correct, these sound waves are either sentient themselves or housing some sort of life form. Unbelievable."
- Explorer Cutler: "The Commander is right. Somehow, these sound waves are sentient, but their “habitat” is no longer sustainable, due to the drift in interstellar matter. It seems they’ve been forced to take on a parasitic existence, luring in ships and crews to forge intermediaries to relay them."
- Lieutenant Ogawa: "But the fact still stands that their method so survival is harmful to organic life forms and technology alike. I know we have to be cognizant of other lifeforms, but we have a duty to our fellow crew members a swell. What do you think, Captain?"
- Choice A:
- Captain: "It’s our responsibility to prevent the extinction of this species."
- Commander Uhura: "I agree that we cannot leave this species to languish in the void of space. But they’re more than our crew or our ship can handle. Still, in their own way, they sent us a distress signal. We can’t just ignore them."
- Choice B:
- Captain: "We could learn a lot from this species and how they live and migrate."
- Explorer Cutler: "We could. The way they travel, their ingenuity in navigation interstellar matter, their very existence. It’s all completely fascinating. But the idea of diving that deep with a species so fragile it’s on the verge of extinction, and yet so volatile, it puts our crew at risk…"
- Choice C:
- Captain: "We can’t risk the safety of our crews any further."
- Lieutenant Ogawa: "I have to agree. I’m not unsympathetic to this species, as everyone keeps calling it. We doctors and nurses seek to save lives. But their parasitic existence is putting our crew at risk."
- Commander Uhura: "It’s not an easy matter to solve. However, I believe you’ll make the right choice, Captain. We’re counting on you."
Epilogue
- Commander Uhura: "Well done, Captain. In the beginning, there didn't appear to be any easy solution, but you managed to collaborate and find a secure temporary home for this sound 'species'"
- Explorer Cutler: "Yes. Granted, finding collaborators isn't hard when so many are interested in studying this microscopic lifeform that seems to inhabit sound waves, but for now, it seems like they'll be safe and preserved until a more permanent solution can be found."
- Lieutenant Ogawa: "Not to be insensitive, but the sooner they find a new interstellar cloud to live in, the better. My ears can't take much more and quite frankly, it seems awfully parasitic to live by pounding around someone else's eardrums.”
- Explorer Cutler: "And yet, they’ve found a peaceful coexistence with their temporary hosts. What seems parasitic to one might be symbiotic for another. In the end, I think we've managed a harmonious solution.”
