Storyline
Announcement
First contact is important, but it sure isn’t easy. While attempting to reevaluate the literal offerings Starfleet makes to new contacts, they find the exchange may leave them with more than they bargain for. [1]
Prologue
- Projector Spock: "The temporal anomaly crisis has prompted a review of our first contact protocol, including what we bring into other societies and factions. I understand some of you have some concerns."
- Worst Contact Riker: "I sure do. How about we start with being a little more thorough in our briefings regarding the...customs of species we'll be making first contact with?"
- Bat'leth Mariner: "Aww, what's wrong, Will? Not a fan of microwaved leftover fish? is your stomach too delicate after years of Betazoid cuisine? Although they could really help sweeten the pot with some nice goodies for new first contacts. Have you seen the junk they've been giving away?"
- Projector Spock: "So your concerns are no microwaved fish and more 'goodies' for first contact species? I am not sure I follow. Captain, perhaps you might provide some clarification and input of your own?"
Intermission
- Projector Spock: "Thank you for your contributions, Captain. There is much here to consider. I do believe you have accounted for the 'goodies' Ensign Mariner spoke of, but not the fish."
- Bat'leth Mariner: "Forget about the fish! This is all great! I mean, I was hoping you would have some ideas for some perks for those of us who excel in first or second contact. You know, maybe we can make contact with species with nice tropical vacation planets or something. I'm just saying."
- Hologram Garak: "Mariner, are you telling us you consider what you do 'excelling' in first or second contact? I wouldn't consider causing upheaval and risking the stability of entire societies 'excelling' in contact, would you?"
- Choice A
- Captain: "What about you, Garak? What do you think is important?"
- Hologram Garak: "I may not 'excel' in first contact, but I would say it's important to account for each society's unique way of life. Take us Cardassians. I'm sure you've noticed that we aren't the galaxy's most hospitable. One can't be when suspicion becomes necessary for survival."
- Choice B
- Captain: "As a Vulcan, what are your thoughts, Spock?"
- Projector Spock: "I am not familiar enough with Ensign Mariner's record to offer commentary. ...or were you referring to our first contact discussion? In that case, I am inclined to defer to the Council's opinions on the matter...though I do feel the ability to be flexible is vital in first contact."
- Choice C
- Captain: "That's just outside-the—box thinking, right, Mariner?"
- Bat'leth Mariner: "Right! Glad someone gets it! First contact requires being flexible, being able to act in the moment. And, I mean, you all can't just expect me to sit by and watch things go to hell."
- Hologram Garak: "Perhaps it's a little forward for a humble Cardassian tailor to weigh in on such vital Federation matters, but since this is about making first contact, why not seek the advice of factions who have actually been through first contact with the Federation?"
Epilogue
- Bat'leth Mariner: "Nice work, Captain. The Bajorans actually had some great ideas about sprucing up first contact. ...also, thanks for getting me out of that jam back there with the Tear and all."
- Projector Spock: "I have also gained a great deal from this experience. For example, I believe my audience will greatly enjoy the footage of Ensign Mariner denting one of the Orbs with her bat'Ieth. Surely that is an appr0priate blooper for my reel."
