Storyline
The temporal anomaly crisis has shone new light on many previously closed cases. When murder victims can speak up to accuse their killers and once-absent comrades can now provide alibis, the galaxy’s judges and juries have a lot to reconsider. [1]
Prologue
- Ba'ku Worf: "Captain, Starfleet is receiving reports from courts across the quadrant. With these temporal anomalies, new witnesses are coming forward about old crimes. Lost evidence is being found. Murder victims from our time are alive and accusing their killers."
- Ba'ku Worf: "Once a case is closed, it is only right that it stay closed...but we must restore order before Starfleet or anyone else can pass judgment. Otherwise we will have many new crimes on our hands."
Intermission
- Ba'ku Worf: "Thank you for defusing the situation, Captain. It is unjust that these people could be tried again for crimes they have already stood trial for. To doubt the original verdicts is to doubt the honor of those who made them. The Klingon Empire intends to stand by the old rulings."
- Lieutenant Tom Paris: "So you'll just let people walk away even if we know they're guilty? Everyone has to own up to their mistakes sooner or later. Let me and the Hirogen track them down, Captain, and they'll pay for what they've done. I promise I won't let the Hirogen get too carried away."
- Choice A
- Captain: "That's not going to be a popular decision, Worf. Can you keep those people safe?"
- Ba'ku Worf: "Klingon courts are another kind of battlefield to us, Captain. Those who command them take their duties very seriously. We will protect anyone who faces trial for a crime that has already been judged, and I do not envy those who would stand against us."
- Choice B
- Captain: "Paris, are you sure you can control the Hirogen once they're on a hunt?"
- Lieutenant Tom Paris: "You know that old saying about journeys and destinations? If finding these people is enough of a challenge, that'll satisfy them. And if the Hirogen try to do anything more than catch them, I'll remind them that half the quadrant will be hunting them down instead."
- Choice C
- Captain: "Every case is different. Each deserves a fair retrial, not a single ruling."
- Grand Nagus Rom: "If you'd rather have each case judged on its own, I'd be happy to host retrials on Ferenginar. There would be fees for booking the court rooms, hiring judges...but I promise we'll give each one a fair trial. As long as both sides can bribe the judges equally, of course."
- Choice A
- Captain: "Bribery? You call that an honest courtroom?"
- Grand Nagus Rom: "How much more honest could it be? If one side's paying the judge more, they'll always tell the other. There's double the profit for them if both sides raise their prices. With a Ferengi judge, you always know where you stand."
- Choice B
- Captain: "Just who do you expect to pay all of these court fees?"
- Grand Nagus Rom: "Both sides of the cases, of course! Although if Starfleet would feel better about sponsoring the retrials itself, we wouldn't turn down such a generous offer."
- Choice C
- Captain: "That's fairer than many other judges would be. Set it up."
- Grand Nagus Rom: "Of course, although, er, we may need some help rounding up everyone involved. It turns out there are a lot of hurt feelings over all these old cases..."
Epilogue
- Ba'ku Worf: "Thank you for standing by my people, Captain. Once the Klingon Empire declared that those accused of old crimes were under our protection, few were bold enough to challenge us."
- Ba'ku Worf: "The accused have already paid for their crimes, some for ones they did not commit. I know how difficult it is to bear the shame of another's dishonor... better to give them a chance to redeem themselves than to punish them again. There is no justice in that. Not for anyone."
