Storyline

Announcement

With the revelation that the planet’s fantasies are self-generated and that Luau Q is being used as its avatar, Starfleet is desperate for a resolution before the planet attempts to deploy another of its holographic fantasies into space. However, running parallel to discussions of how to deal with the sentient “dream machine” comes the question of what to do with the planet itself, a question which threatens to escalate tensions among several powerful factions. [1]

Prologue

  • Brother Rom: "A world where any dream could come true. That sounds like...well, uh, a dream come true."
  • Tactical Michael Burnham: "If it sounds too good to be true, though, it usually is. And that seems to be the case here. The dreams are merely more convincing holograms, but at the end of the day, the result is still as fleeting."
  • Rurigan: "Exactly. And without someone actually controlling the holograms or something to restrict them, we could end up with more erratic space flights."
  • Tactical Michael Burnham: "Not to mention the toxic appeal to anyone who would use this dream machine for malicious ends. But before we can make our next move, we'll need more information."

Intermission

  • Tactical Michael Burnham: "It looks like interest in Elpis V has heated up, but you handled the increase in visitors - and in competition for new residents - with skill and intelligence."
  • Brother Rom: "I can tell you from dealing with my brother that sometimes dealing with interested parties is the hardest part. I mean, who knows what would happen if someone took over this planet? What would they do with that dream machine anyway?"
  • Luau Q: "Do I not have a say in all this? I'm sorry, how rude of me for not introducing myself sooner. I had no way of communicating in a way your species is accustomed to until I came across holograms of this divine individual. I'm sure you understand why I borrowed his likeness."
  • Luau Q: "At any rate, I feel it is vital to speak in my own defense. I may be a machine crafted by a civilization long extinct, but I have been faithful in fulfilling my duties. Caring for Elpis V, granting the wishes of those who visit, rare though they may be."
  • Choice A:
    • Captain: "What happened to the civilization who created you?"
    • Luau Q: "I believe there is some wisdom among lifeforms such as yours than [sic] discourages those who would try to live exclusively in dreams. They forgot their own mortality, the needs of their species and their planet. They just faded away like night into day."
  • Choice B:
    • Captain: "You were here all alone?"
    • Luau Q: "For centuries, perhaps millennia. I once knew, but I deleted that information to make room for other improvements. Visitors did come and each time, I sought to make all their dreams and fantasies come true, in the hopes they would bring others with them and end my loneliness."
  • Choice C:
    • Captain: "Why did you do all this now?"
    • Luau Q: "It may sound unthinkable that a machine might forget or age, but I was losing touch with myself, with the purpose for which I was created. I continued improving my technology and the holograms over the years, but had no one to share it with. "
  • Luau Q: "I know you all see me as just a machine, with no rights to own or govern land. But this is my home. And I have cared more for it, for far longer, than any other inhabitant."
  • Rurigan: "He has a point. And it's an important one to consider. This is a heavy decision, Captain, but let's work hard to find a solution to Elpis V and its longest lived inhabitant."

Epilogue

  • Luau Q: "Thank you, Captain. I doubt everyone in your Starfleet would treat a machine such as myself with the dignity you have. Though I have had to compromise with some limitations to my capabilities, I believe you will find me a fine steward for Elpis V."
  • Rurigan: "You will be wonderful. And don't forget some of your improvements. You now have improved capabilities to reach allied factions across the galaxy, should you ever need anything or want some company."
  • Tactical Michael Burnham: "And if you so choose, you have members of certain factions, like the Maquis, happy to live under your rules if it means a permanent home. You're making deeply held dreams actual reality. Not just crafting false fantasies. A world of dreams come true for those who need it most. "
  • Luau Q: "I believe you are right. Thank you. I believe this is what my creators wished for me from the start. And now, I can truly fulfill my purpose."
