Storyline
Announcement
The commanding officers of the Cerritos are meeting with the Wadi for a light-hearted afternoon of leisure in the hopes of leaving a better impression than first contact at Quark’s did. But when the Cerritos begins to experience a series of strange phenomena, it’s clear that playtime is over. [1]
Prologue
- Klingon Neelix: "Thanks for answering our hails, Captain. You see, the officers here on the Cerritos invited me to play some human games with them and the Wadi and the ambassador as well. I've spent years in space with humans, but these Wadi guys picked it up quicker than I ever could."
- Klingon Neelix: "Of course, I wouldn't hail you just to tell you I lost every round of this chess game. It's just that, all of a sudden, the pieces started getting bigger and bigger until that castle piece fell of the board and became life-size. I don't think that's supposed to happen."
- Master Surchid Falow: "I believe the Captain called that piece a 'rook', my Talaxian friend. And what a curious game we find ourselves in. Chess mixed with dom-jot. Chula and kal-toh. And despite the suggestions I've heard here, I'm afraid we cannot claim credit for this masterpiece."
- Captain Carol Freeman: "There you have it, Captain. If it's not the Wadi at work, then we have no idea who could be responsible. We're lucky we were able to communicate with you at all, as this game seems to be interfering with the ship. Help us out here."
Intermission
- Talosian Keeper: "It would seem our attempt at amusement has created displeasure. We sensed your desire to connect and your enjoyment while playing these games and merely hoped to increase those positive experiences."
- Captain Carol Freeman: "Well, your efforts are appreciated, but perhaps you could remove the life-threatening full-sized game pieces and allow us to go back to our table-sized fun?"
- Choice A:
- Captain: "What is your business with the Cerritos?"
- Talosian Keeper: "As I have stated, we sensed the emotions and motivations of the individuals aboard the vessel."
- Choice B:
- Captain: "All right, how do we play your game?"
- Talosian Keeper: "We believe a factor of enjoyment is in the discovery. Please enjoy learning the rules of this game throughout experience. "
- Choice C:
- Captain: "Are you just deriving your own enjoyment from our pain?"
- Talosian Keeper: "We do not derive enjoyment from pain. Perhaps understanding, empathy, but not enjoyment, no. We only wish to see what is best for you. All of you. "
- Talosian Keeper: "We sense there is still a significant gap between your species which might be bridged through collaborative recreation. Please proceed with the game."
Epilogue
- Klingon Neelix: "Thanks for the rescue, Captain. The Talosians have a sick idea of fostering alliances, if you ask me. Falow said his people believe in bringing people together through games, but let's try sticking to checkers and cards instead of giant death mazes, please."
