Storyline
Announcement
After a recent outbreak of crime on the surface of Bajor, the Vedek Assembly convenes to try and reach a solution. Many of the perpetrators are former freedom fighters from the war, who are now left with their anxiety and trauma and no outlet for it. [1]
Prologue
- Niners Kira Nerys: "The Vedeks are fed up. Violence and crime among young Bajorans is at an all-time high. Naturally, the Vedeks want to take the fire and brimstone approach, but I think that's just going to make things worse."
- Niners Kira Nerys: "Most of these kids were born during the Occupation. They were born into a world of violence and fear. They've never known a life of peace and have no idea where to place their pent-up emotions. I sure didn't when I was their age. So we need to give them a way to channel it."
- Tee Time Doctor: "What the Colonel is trying to say, Captain, is that she wants to create a new sport for the Bajoran people to channel all of that post-war anxiety. As a physician, I agree that sports can do wonders for one's wellbeing, even if the Bajorans aren't known for their athletics."
- Swordsman Scotty: "You've no place to talk, hologram! Golf? Aye, that's as athletic as Andorian pottery! But that mouthy blast of photons is right. A new leisure pursuit might unite the Bajorans around something light and fun. But we could use your help researching to give us some ideas."
Intermission
- Tee Time Doctor: "This is quite the diverse batch of inspiration you've brought us here, Captain. I'd say your efforts were a hole in one."
- Swordsman Scotty: "Ugh. Proud of that humor, are you you, hologram? I miss the days when the ship's computer just executed the essential functions without trying to be funny. Anyway, this is a nice spread you've brought us."
- Niners Kira Nerys: "Yes, there's definitely a lot here to work with. Well, Captain, what do you think is the most important aspect of a sport?"
- Choice A
- Captain: "The physical benefits outweigh all others."
- Tee Time Doctor: "Precisely. And the sport needn't even require a great deal of exertion, like football or running. Look at me. I play golf, a subdued gentleman's game, and I'm the picture of an impeccable physique."
- Swordsman Scotty: "Your physique is as good a justification for golf as mine is for Klingon opera."
- Choice B
- Captain: "The tradition surrounding the sport is most important."
- Niners Kira Nerys: "This is the angle that will resonate most with my people. Tradition, or even the relief of seeing hints of the old Bajor, got so many people through. Maybe creating a new tradition surrounding a sport that's all our own will help them take their next step into the future."
- Choice C
- Captain: "The teamwork a sport can teach is paramount."
- Swordsman Scotty: "I've gotta agree with you there, Captain. Does you good your whole life through too, learning to get along with others and work together."
- Niners Kira Nerys: "Maybe it would help narrow some of these ideas down if we focus on that one aspect. Captain, do you think we could get you to do a little more research for us? Maybe poke around and get some more specifics?"
Epilogue
- Tee Time Doctor: "Apologies, Captain, but frankly I haven't much time to wax poetic with you about your research skills. I'm not sure who programmed this Jack Nicklaus hologram, but his handicap was clearly a lie. I'm on the last hole and I refuse to allow him to show me up."
- Tee Time Doctor: "You certainly have managed to pull ideas from across the Federation, though. I believe some of these haven't been played in centuries. Did you tell the Vulcans that their pre-Surakan ancestors played an ancient form of bowling? I would love to see the look on their faces."
- Niners Kira Nerys: "I'm not sure I believe it myself. Imagine Vulcans arguing over bowling stats. Anyway, I really am grateful, Captain. The Federation is vast and I know it took a lot of time for you to comb through all of this."
- Swordsman Scotty: "I'm glad you did it too. But I think I'll pass on that Romulan rugby. Someone's probably more likely to die in one of those matches than a bat'leth competition, eh?"
