Storyline
Announcement
Lewis Zimmerman has been studying the prospects for holotechnology and how the spore drive and Mycelial network might impact them. Things go wrong when Mirror Stamets begins making his own adjustments... [1]
Prologue
- Lewis Zimmerman: "Captain, you'll be interested to know that we're on the verge of a breakthrough here. I've been studying the impact of the Discovery's spore drive on modern holotechnology."
- Lewis Zimmerman: "Well, I WAS on the verge of a breakthrough before someone began tampering with the equipment. The engineers they sent assure me no one could have tampered with the equipment, but tell me, how is it my holograms have become sentient and managed to walk off on their own?"
- Q: "And you humans lecture me on playing god. Frustrating when the puppets break loose from their strings, isn't it, Doctor?"
- Lewis Zimmerman: "And I'm sure you had nothing to do with any of this, huh?"
- Q: "Please, I have much better ways of amusing myself. For right now, I'll enjoy watching you attempt to clean up this mess. Best of luck, Captain."
Intermission
- Lewis Zimmerman: "Well, Captain, at least you were quick to address the problem, though you do show a blatant lack of concern for the outcome of my research. And this mad scientist from the other side of the looking glass has already set my work back a week as it is."
- Mirror Paul Stamets: "As if you made anything resembling progress. You're a hack in our universe too, Zimmerman! I gave you real results, sentient holograms with corporeal bodies constructed by amassing spores from the network. And you all just toss it aside."
- Lewis Zimmerman: "I doubt the crew appreciates your 'results,' Stamets. Not that I particularly care, but...."
- Choice A:
- Captain: "What exactly is going on aboard the Discovery?"
- Lewis Zimmerman: "Thanks to the spores, the holograms took on physical forms and began interacting with the crew. Some were designed off of actual crew members and apparently began initiating or changing existing relationships."
- Choice B:
- Captain: "Maybe this situation has unearthed some genuine feelings."
- Lewis Zimmerman: "Maybe it has. I personally couldn't care less. But I don't want an earful from Starfleet Command when people start transferring out en masse because they thought someone loved them, only to find it had just been a hologram."
- Choice C:
- Captain: "Must we interfere in the emotional affairs of this crew?"
- Mirror Paul Stamets: "It's all ridiculous. Sure, let's ignore it. End up with a ship full of hurt feelings or hologram addicts. But if you're going to leave the Discovery like that, at least turn the ship over to someone willing to continue research on the mycelial network, like me."
- Mirror Paul Stamets: "I don't know why you're all so worried. Why not just see how this plays out? But if you must entangle yourself in the affairs of the Discovery, you may want to get the insight of one of these factions you've enlisted."
Epilogue
- Mirror Paul Stamets: "Again, my efforts have gone unappreciated. I changed up the right variables and gave you something genuine. Real science isn't pretty, it involves risk. You weaklings in the Federation just can't handle it."
- Lewis Zimmerman: "Step down off your soap box, boy, and come back with some results whenever they let you out of the brig. Then maybe we'll talk about real science."
- Lewis Zimmerman: "It pains me to admit that his interference actually did lead to some interesting outcomes. And I suppose I do have to commend you, Captain. Human relationships are not my strong suit. I'm far better with holograms. But you sorted out these misunderstandings with ease."
- Lewis Zimmerman: "But you've done all you can here. The rest falls to the crew to sort out."
