Law of Conservation
The Federation is crippled overnight when transporters universally stop functioning. Is it an act of sabotage, or some new law of physics? Work with the brightest minds in the universe to find the answer!
Details
Law of Conservation was a Galaxy Event which ran from 12:00 PM EST (16:00 UTC) Thursday, September 24, 2020 through 12:00 PM EST (16:00 UTC) Monday, September 28, 2020.

Storyline
Announcement
Seemingly overnight, transporters everywhere suddenly become lethal! Transporters have long been the de facto mode of transportation for both people and goods, and without them, the entire Federation is crippled. As factions accuse each other of sabotage, work with transporter experts and forward thinkers to try and resolve the problem, which must go far beyond a scrambled pattern buffer… right? [1]
Prologue
- Transporter Chief Rand: "I'm sure you received the emergency briefing stating all transporters should be deactivated until further notice. Well, it's not just Starfleet. Across the entire Federation, transporters are no longer working properly."
- Emory Erickson: "When I designed the transporter, time was an arrow. now it's... none of us really know what it is, anymore. But there are now forces in play that I could never have accounted for. What if all these years, all those transports, we've been building towards this crisis?"
- Altan Soong: "I admire your willingness to find fault in your own design, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. We need to understand whether this problem is limited to the Federation's transporters, or common to all of them, everywhere, across faction lines."
Intermission
- Emory Erickson: "It's confirmed. It doesn't matter who owns them, who operates them, or how they were designed: all transporters in the universe no longer function properly. So many lives lost... "
- Transporter Chief Rand: "We'll find a solution. Until then, we can go back to old methods. We could all use more exercise, right?"
- Altan Soong: "You're making light of a serious problem. Without transporters, the Federation is crippled. Whole supply chains are broken. Medical emergencies can't get to where they need to go. We need to fix this now, and I think Emory was on to something."
- Choice A
- Captain: "Doctor Soong is right. There are likely temporal forces at work here." [Go to Soong's response at end, "Emory, you mentioned something."]
- Choice B
- Captain: "You're being alarmist. Our ancestors did fine without transporters."
- Altan Soong: " Define 'fine.' Because fine centuries ago meant many more lives lost, directly and indirectly, for lack of speedy transport. Emory wanted more than fine, and so do I."
- Choice C
- Captain: "Let me guess: something with androids?"
- Altan Soong: "No. At least, not this time. "
- Altan Soong: "Emory, you mentioned something about critical mass, that every time we transport, we were building towards a problem. I agree with you, but not since your invention--this crisis." "
- Altan Soong: "What if every time we've transported someone not of this timeline, we've transported them in every timeline? Creating infinite copies, little black holes of transportees here and there and-- "
- Transporter Chief Rand: "That's a fine theory. But I'm more interested in solutions. Let's get to finding one."
Epilogue
- Emory Erickson: "I can't let you do this, Altan. I let my son be the guinea pig, and I lost him. You can't be the first to try this--"
- Altan Soong: "If not me, who? I'm from the future, comparatively. If something happens to me, it's far better than if something happens to you. Energize, Chief."
- Transporter Chief Rand: "Here goes. Energizing... hailing Doctor Soong... Altan? Are you there?"
- Altan Soong: "The weather's fine on Vulcan today! We've done it, friends! Thank you, Captain. And I want to say, even now: transporters are still the safest mode of travel."
