Storyline
Announcement
It has been a challenging year in the Alpha Quadrant. A new initiative from Starfleet Command has noted the importance of leave time for the well-being of its staff, so that personnel can relax and see their loved ones. This initiative has allowed many to take much needed time off, but it has left some factions concerned about the mass absence of a protective force and others seeing it as an opportunity. As strange vessels appear on the outskirts of the Quadrant, anxieties intensify. [1]
Prologue
- Mountaineer Spock: "It is obvious that fatigue has set in across Starfleet. In response, Command has enacted a liberal leave policy. While I believe this will increase personnel efficiency in the long run, it does leave us understaffed for the forseeable future."
- Disguised Chakotay: "It's a fair concern, though I feel Starfleet made the right choice. Still, plenty of factions are chomping at the bit to take any opportunity they can to impress the Federation. If I were going to go with anyone, it would certainly be the Maquis."
- Tourist Quark: "That's the great thing about a vacation. It gives you a fresh set of eyes. You say Maquis, I say, why haven't they done anything about those mysterious ships spotted at your borders? Put the Ferengi to work. You got the latinum? We got the best mercenaries money can buy."
- Etana Jol: "Have you forgotten the Maquis hate the Federation? And Quark, you and I have gotten to know each other better these past few days, but you Ferengi are more lovers than fighters. Leave it to the Klingons. They enjoy that sort of thing."
- Disguised Chakotay: "Far be it for me to say someone who attempted to infiltrate Starfleet doesn't deserve a second chance. But if these reports from our borders are true... as with so many things, Captain, I'm afraid it's in your hands."
Intermission
- Mountaineer Spock: "I fail to see the value of allies who spend more time squabbling than defending the Federation. At any rate, we have larger concerns."
- Mountaineer Spock: "The Department of Temporal Investigations has detected unnatural temporal activity–that is, triggered by mechanical means. They suspect the Sphere Builders–are you familiar with them?"
- Choice A
- Captain: "The Sphere Builders?"
- Disguised Chakotay: "Yes. They're a race of trans-dimensional beings who have a bit of a tempermental history with Starfleet. They've used others to try and strike at Earth. And I can't think anything good could come from them tampering with the timeline."
- Choice B
- Captain: "You seem familiar with them. What is your experience with them?"
- Mountaineer Spock: "My experience is not firsthand, I'm afraid. Their primary contact with Starfleet came in those formative years before the Federation's founding, when they saw Earth as a threat and decided to manipulate another species to launch an attack on it."
- Choice C
- Captain: "Never heard of them. What could they want?"
- Tourist Quark: "Well, you can be sure they aren't here to share a bottle of synthale. Those megalomaniacs! They're up there with the Dominion. If you ask me, they've got one thing on their minds–galactic domination. Their superiority complex makes them think they're better than 'linear beings.'"
- Tourist Quark: "I hope you're good with the whole diplomacy thing, Captain. Go size 'em up and try to see if this really is their work. Who knows, maybe they do come in peace. Either way, try not to make 'em mad. I'd really prefer not to spend my evening getting blown up."
Epilogue
- Mountaineer Spock: "We have confirmed the Sphere Builders are responsible for the recent adjustments to our reality. Considering their past attempts to control the Federation through temporal science, this is concerning."
- Mountaineer Spock: "More concerning, however, is that they were discovered via transmissions between themselves and Etana Jol. Will you explain yourself, madam?"
- Etana Jol: "It's obvious your knowledge of the Sphere-Builders is woefully limited. But at the end of the day, it's all just business to me. No different than your Ferengi friend? How easy do you think it would be for the Sphere-Builders to lure him away, given enough latinum?"
- Tourist Quark: "No one has that much latinum. Captain, random and uncontrollable changes to the timeline are one thing. Intentional changes by someone with an agenda are something much, much worse. We have to stop them."
