Storyline
Announcement
After losing its corporeal crew in an accident, a ship transporting a Yaderan hologenerator is now entirely run by holograms, all eager to start new lives outside the holodeck. Unfortunately, their different holoprograms mean different priorities, and several factions have expressed an interest in this unique crew’s fate. What will the ship’s final destination be? [1]
Prologue
- Buster Kincaid: "Captain... it's good to see someone with a flesh and blood face! When the Captain Proton holoprogram I was running malfunctioned, I realized I wasn't on Voyager anymore. I stepped out of the holodeck to find a ship full of holograms–and me the only real person onboard."
- Buster Kincaid: "It's been a challenge, corralling all these holograms from different programs and revealing to them what they really are, but they've all taken it pretty well. And thanks to a strange device this ship's crew was apparently transporting, they're able to help me crew the ship."
- Buster Kincaid: "We've kept her afloat since then, but we're losing power as we go. If it fails, all of these holograms will disappear, forever. They've become just as real to me as Voyager's EMH. They're my crew, and they're counting on me. From one captain-of-sorts to another, can I count on you to help?"
Intermission
- Buster Kincaid: "I owe you one, Captain. The ship looks good as new and we're back to full power. Now that we know we're going to make it, the question is, where should we go? The problem with having so many different people aboard is, well, we don't all share the same priorities."
- Buster Kincaid: "As far as I or Federation salvage laws are concerned, this ship is ours. I'm happy to keep captaining it, as long as my crew supports me. We've also received an offer from the Augments, of technology that'll keep the crew, err... perpetually activated."
- Duchamps: "Speak for yourself, Kincaid. I didn't get out of a photonic prison to spend the rest of my life on your ship! Section 31's offering something called mobile emitters that would let us walk out of here as free agents, and a few of us have skills they might appreciate."
- Honey Bare: "He does have a point about being stuck here. The ship's a nice way to travel, but I'd rather be on a planet, somewhere with room for my research. There's a group called the Dominion with land to spare on one of their worlds. Imagine what we could do with our own colony!"
- choice A
- Captain: "What sort of help are the Augments offering, exactly?"
- Buster Kincaid: "Multiple emitters all over the ship, backup power systems to keep them running–that sort of thing. I know about the Eugenics Wars, and the Augments' violent history... but we're all reinventing ourselves in this crisis. Maybe it's time for centuries-old prejudices to die."
- choice B
- Captain: "Duchamps, do you trust Section 31 to give you the emitters they've promised?"
- Duchamps: "They'll have to if they want us going on missions outside of ships like this. I'm sure they have an insurance policy to keep us from running off with them, but as long as I've got one in my hands, I'll be leaving with it sooner or later."
- choice C
- Captain: "Why would the Dominion take such an interest in some holograms?"
- Honey Bare: "It'll take some getting used to, but the truth is, we're a different form of life than you, closer to the Dominion's Founders than anything else. Maybe they're just trying to do right by us. Whatever their reasons, they do have the technology to make a colony happen."
- Buster Kincaid: "I've dreamed of being captain. This might be the only chance I ever get. I'd like to take advantage of it, before an anomaly takes me back to being an ensign on the holodeck. But it is my first command... what would you advise, Captain? Where should we go?"
Epilogue
- Duchamps: "I appreciate your assistance getting us to Section 31, Captain. Their facilities are impressive. Some of the others seem... squeamish about the work Section 31 has lined up for them, but I suppose not all of our programming includes pragmatism."
- Duchamps: "A job is a job. If it's worth the reward, it's worth doing–and what's worth more than the power to be your own master? I'll play along on these "missions" of theirs, but once my contract is complete, I'm a free man. I hope this Alpha Quadrant of yours has some decent casinos..."
