Storyline
Announcement
The Augment rebels have vanished, but Starfleet is receiving scattered, cryptic messages from Bashir (still undercover.) With Sarina Douglas’s help, Bashir’s transmissions are decoded, and the awful truth is revealed: the Augment rebels have allied themselves with Species 8472, a species even the fearsome Borg defined as the “apex of biological evolution.” Khan insists the only way to counter such a species is to evolve beyond them. Or, in other words, the Alpha Quadrant needs as many Augments as it can get before the rebels and Species 8472 return. [1]
Prologue
- Sarina Douglas: "It looks like Roga Danar and his men have retreated. While I feel relieved about that, they still have Doctor Bashir with them. I'm so worried about him."
- Sarina Douglas: "But he has to be alive. We've been getting messages here and there from him. The only problem is that his messages are encrypted. No matter how hard I try, I can't decode them on my own."
- Sarina Douglas: "So I need your help, Captain. I need all of the resources you can find that could help me decode his messages. We need to know if Doctor Bashir is all right, and more importantly, what Roga and his men are planning to do next."
Intermission
- Seven of Nine: "The messages from Bashir have been decoded. Roga and his men have allied themselves with Species 8472, identified by the Borg as the most distinct in the known galaxy–the apex of evolution. Odds of a Federation victory over such a species are astronomically low."
- Young Khan: "If their advancement is the concern, then our only choice is to outstrip them by evolving ourselves. Those of you in the Federation may not relish this answer, but Augmentation is the best way. We need more enhanced soldiers to fight this battle."
- Seven of Nine: "That is a flawed strategy. Augmented humans are still primitive when compared to Species 8472. The Federation must concentrate on detecting a weakness in Species 8472, not an expanded augmentation program."
- Choice A
- Captain: "In spite of my hesitance, I think Khan may be right. We need more Augments."
- Young Khan: "Ah, Captain, I'm glad to see at least you can rise above your own prejudices and that you are prepared to do what needs to be done. I assure you, we Augments will be able to stand against Species 8472."
- Choice B
- Captain: "We can't risk sliding back to the Earth of the twentieth century."
- Seven of Nine: "This crisis began because of an Augment-initiated attack. It is counterintuitive to expect that generating more of them would lead to a positive outcome."
- Choice C
- Captain: "I'm uneasy about increasing the number of Augments, but..."
- Young Khan: "But you see what a necessity it is, don't you, Captain? I trust someone with your sensibilities understands what must be done here and certainly wouldn't be foolish enough to stand in the way of that."
- Sarina Douglas: "At any rate, all we can do is hope for the best, futile as it seems. If the Borg are afraid of this Species 8472, I can't imagine what a confrontation with them would be like."
Epilogue
- Young Khan: "I am disappointed, Captain, but on top of that, I must say you have dug your own grave. True, I was rather impressed with the efficiency with which you managed to stymie my efforts."
- Young Khan: "But in the end, you, and the Federation, will suffer as a result of your actions. Handling Roga Danar and his men was one thing, but standing against them and Species 8472 without Augment intervention? I find the prospect laughable."
- Sarina Douglas: "I hope this isn't a decision we regret, Captain. But I feel like turning Khan's offer down was the right thing. The Federation couldn't risk increasing Augment numbers like that. I just hope Doctor Bashir is all right..."
