Storyline
Announcement
The playwright Kelis and the EMH have partnered to create a new theatrical work based on the temporal anomaly crisis. As they argue over the play’s creative direction, Barclay tries (and fails) to get their attention regarding a potential threat to the production.. [1]
Prologue
- Author Doctor: "Really, Mister Barclay, I'm beginning to regret casting you in the lead role. This play is too important to capturing the moment we're in to leave it an amateur. Or another writer...."
- Kelis: "You need a voice that wasn't literally programmed by the Federation. Mister Barclay's going to be fine. He's just letting his nerves get the best of him."
- Cyrano Barclay: "Captain... I promise it's not nerves. I mean, I have them, but they're unrelated to the real threat facing this production. Someone doesn't want this show to go on, and I think they're willing to use violence to make sure it doesn't. Can you help me prove it?"
Intermission
- Kelis: "I apologize, Mister Barclay. It seems the threat is quite real. We've received a list of demanded changes to the production. If we fail to make them, our mysterious enemy will carry out their threat on opening night."
- Author Doctor: "I won't be censored or bullied. And I find it highly suspicious that most of the changes are in the parts of the play that I wrote. Perhaps this enemy's identity isn't so mysterious after all, eh, Kelis?"
- Choice A
- Captain: "Your ego is literally endangering your audience!"
- Author Doctor: "If I'm defensive of the work, I apologize... but all I've written is the truth. Of the pain and confusion this temporal crisis has caused, but also the beauty of it."
- Choice B
- Captain: "So we know there's a threat. How do we stop it?"
- Choice C
- Captain: "Let's just cancel it. No play is this important."
- Kelis: "What we've created might be forgotten the next day, or remembered forever. We'll never know unless we get the chance to share it. And if provokes this kind of feeling... surely we've said something important?"
- Cyrano Barclay: "We have to identify the perpetrators. This play clearly has some detractors, but it also has fans across the galaxy. Any of them would be willing to help, if you're willing to work with them."
Epilogue
- Lieutenant B'Elanna Torres: "I'm happy to tell you the threat to the production's been eliminated. I'm embarrassed to tell you that the threat was actually a holoprogram--a failsafe created by the Doctor months ago, in the event that he found his co-director too difficult to work with."
- Author Doctor: "I suppose that proves my writing is realistic, at least? I'm embarrassed, too. I'm sorry I thought so little of you when we first met, Kelis. You're flesh and blood, and I'm... I suppose I worried you wouldn't take my artistic contributions seriously."
- Kelis: "Any being that can write like you must have a soul, Doctor--whatever he's made of. And I fully understand how someone can get carried away when it comes to their art. Let's put it behind us and enjoy opening night, yes?"
- Cyrano Barclay: "That's my cue. I'm nervous, but... if we've survived the temporal crisis this long, we can do anything, right? As long as we're doing it together. Thank you, Captain. Hope I break a leg out there. Maybe two! Err... or not...."
