Storyline
Announcement
Quark already had more experience than most Ferengi with human history, and the temporal anomaly crisis has afforded him even more. He begun to genuinely believe that humanity has gotten worse, not better. At first, this belief appears to manifest harmlessly: Quark wants to bring the sport of baseball back on a galactic level. But now several factions begin to suspect that he is trying to pull off the greatest match fix in galactic history. [1]
Prologue
- Martian Quark: "You know, I have to say, I have a certain...appreciation for you primitive humans. There's a certain straightforwardness and chaos to you all. I like that in a mark...I mean, uh, a human. Much better than the slippery know-it-all facade of the humans from my time."
- Nurse Faith Garland: "Thank you... I think. I agree with you on one thing, though--getting on with humans from what you all call the present era is more challenging than I expected. The ability to travel through space is amazing enough, but the very core of human interaction has changed."
- Martian Quark: "Yes, yes, technology does much more than just fatten the proverbial wallet. Not that that's a bad thing. Still, maybe it's time to reintroduce a classic human pastime. I think this "baseball" you humans enjoy might be the perfect bridge between generations and species."
Intermission
- Grand Nagus Brunt: "How nice, Captain. Using a human pastime to 'unite the galaxy.' It truly is a lovely idea. Of course, coming from Quark, I would think it normal to have some misgivings regarding his motives."
- Grand Nagus Brunt: "I've followed Quark's example and done research of my own. Are you familiar with the 'Black Sox Scandal of 1919,' Captain? To think, athletes who prided themselves on skill would lose on purpose. It would certainly be a shame if history were to repeat itself, don't you think?"
- Choice A
- Captain: "Do you really believe any of these teams would throw away their pride for Quark?"
- Grand Nagus Brunt: "Money talks, Captain, and everyone has their price. I expect that even the Klingons, in spite of their stubborn obsession with 'honor,' could be bought for the right price."
- Choice B
- Captain: "Knowing Quark, it wouldn't surprise me."
- Grand Nagus Brunt: "Indeed. Though I suppose it will take some work on your part to prove what he's up to."
- Choice C
- Captain: "No match fought for financial gain can be an honorable one."
- Grand Nagus Brunt: "Agreed. But I'll leave it to you to deal with, Captain, since you folks at Starfleet love to play galactic referees anyway."
- Grand Nagus Brunt: "Do what you want, I just thought I should address it with you before an intergalactic incident breaks out. I get a cut of Quark's revenue either way."
Epilogue
- Martian Quark: "The Ferengi won!? You've gotta be kidding me! I mean... go team! It's just, really, could we Ferengi honestly rejoice at such an easy victory? It's beneath us! Bring us a better challenge next time!"
- Grand Nagus Brunt: "Your lies are far more transparent than your business practices, Quark. But I suppose it doesn't matter. This was a delightfully profitable venture."
- Grand Nagus Brunt: "I think you're on to something here. Perhaps this...baseball can become a truly intergalactic pastime indeed."
