Storyline
Announcement
Troubled by the recent strains on the unity of the Klingon Empire, the Klingon High Council has decided to cautiously try and welcome these Klingons of the past into the fold by reviving the Torchbearer tradition. But instead of a single Torchbearer lighting the Beacon of Kahless to bring the houses together, this time multiple Torchbearers from all the houses will make ceremonial journeys throughout the Alpha Quadrant to show the unity the Klingon Empire has with its many non-Klingon allies. But when some of those allies seek to bend this ceremony to their own political ends, where will the Torchbearers end up? [1]
Prologue
- Klingon O'Brien: "Not all of the old ways should be discarded. The Beacon of Kahless was a great symbol, a strong rallying cry. The Klingon High Council believes the Empire is sorely in need of such symbols."
- Klingon O'Brien: "So, they're reviving the tradition–ten-fold. A Torchbearer from each of the great houses will carry a Beacon of Kahless, not to unite the houses, but to unite the Empire with its allies. In particular, we hope that means the Federation."
- Anbo-jyutsu Riker: "This is a fairly complicated operation. The Torchbearers need to outfitted for the journey, their course through Federation space needs to be approved... and of course, we need to ensure everyone's safety. I know we can count on you, Captain."
Intermezzo
- Klingon O'Brien: "For as much as they laugh at human tact and diplomacy, the Klingons have a surprising talent for complicating things. What was supposed to be a symbolic caravan of Torchbearers through Federation space just turned into... well, I don't know what."
- Anbo-jyutsu Riker: "Several members of the Klingon High Council are rethinking visiting Federation space. They feel relations between the Empire and the Federation are strong enough, and they should use this opportunity to make inroads somewhere else."
- Anbo-jyutsu Riker: "Unfortunately, their ideas include the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, in the hopes of recruitment, or the Romulan Star Empire, in the hopes of thumbing their noses at their old enemies. Both sound like fools' errands at best to me."
- choice A
- Captain: "We recently had a saboteur trying to reignite tensions with the Federation. Have the Klingons forgot?"
- Klingon O'Brien: "Politicians of all species suffer from short-term memory loss. At any rate, they know the Federation will keep working to strengthen the alliance on their own."
- choice B
- Captain: "Is the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance actually interested in joining the Empire?"
- Anbo-jyutsu Riker: "This wouldn't be the first time the Empire's tried. So far, nothing's worked... but a Torchbearer is an imposing proposition."
- choice C
- Captain: "Parading a Torchbearer through Romulan space could start a war."
- Anbo-jyutsu Riker: "That might be the point, though the Klingons won't admit it."
- Anbo-jyutsu Riker: "I'm told you're working directly with Klingon authorities now as the Torchbearers' procession continues. That means you're in the best position to influence where they go. I strongly advise you stick to the plan, and keep them in Federation space."
Epilogue
- Anbo-jyutsu Riker: "The Torchbearers took a detour into Klingon-Cardassian Alliance space, I'm told. You should know that for many, it had the opposite effect to what the Klingon Empire intended. Several prominent Alliance Klingons spoke out against the entire house system."
- Klingon O'Brien: "It's not all doom and gloom, though. I'd say an equal number of Alliance Klingons were impressed by the Torchbearers. They may not be prominent, but they've left to join the Empire all the same. Hell, maybe I'll join them. Might as well, while I'm in this form...."
