Storyline
Announcement
Criminals facing harsh sentences have taken advantage of the temporal anomaly crisis, allowing (or encouraging) alternate versions of themselves to be arrested for their own crimes. Without a reliable way to tell many duplicate individuals apart, innocents are serving time while their guilty counterparts walk free - unless Starfleet can find a way to untangle these mistaken identities. [1]
Prologue
- Prisoner O'Brien: "Ever wonder how many other versions of you are out there thanks to these temporal anomalies, running around with your face? Now imagine if one of those other yous gets caught breaking a law. Only they're not the one who gets dragged into a jail cell–you are."
- Prisoner O'Brien: "That's what we're dealing with, all over the galaxy. Sometimes it's a matter of the wrong person getting arrested. Sometimes people even pay one of their, well, duplicates to take their place. It's got to stop, Captain."
- Prisoner O'Brien: "No one should be locked up over something they didn't do, and it's more than just the prisoners who feel it. Their loved ones pay a price, too. Help me put a stop to prison sentences and transfers until we can sort out who's truly guilty from who's innocent."
Intermezzo
- Martia: "Well, Captain, arrests and prison transfers are on hold, but for what? If you ask me, anyone clever enough to stay out of prison deserves to be free, as long as someone's serving the sentence. There's a lot of profit to be made in arrangements like that--just ask the Ferengi."
- Prisoner O'Brien: "Making someone serve time for what another version of them did is downright wrong, Captain. It's...dishonorable. The Klingons understand that, and they're working on legal reforms to tell the innocent from the guilty. I saw we support them."
- Zhian'tara Odo: "That's a lot to expect of a legal system that couldn't tell you from Martia or my current host if they took the right form. The Tal'Shiar claim to have some form of cognitive screening technology that can tell different versions of people apart. It may be our best option."
- choice A
- Captain: "What are your Ferengi friends proposing, Martia?"
- Martia: "Facilitation, mostly. Putting interested parties in touch with those who could take their place, getting them out of tight situations for a price. These are strange times we live in, Captain. Is it so wrong to use that strangeness? Some of us have a living to make."
- choice B
- Captain: "What kind of reforms do the Klingons have in mind?"
- Prisoner O'Brien: "The short version is that they'll demand more evidence for any new trials. Comparison of the accused with known duplicates, verifying alibis for different versions of the same person on the day of the crime, things like that. It's not a perfect system, but it's a start."
- choice C
- Captain: "Curzon, do you trust the Romulans with that kind of invasive technology?"
- Zhian'tara Odo: "Trust? No, but do we have a better choice? I respect the Klingons' intentions, but no amount of legal oversight can tell identical people apart. Engrammatic analysis, quantum scans--these are our best hope of putting the right people away for their crimes."
- Zhian'tara Odo: "My contacts tell me that Starfleet Security is running out of places to hold these prisoners until we decide how to handle their cases. Trust me, Captain, you don't want thousands of people in confined spaces reaching their boiling point. We need to make a decision, now."
Epilogue
- Prisoner O'Brien: "Engineering manuals are lighter reading than Klingon legal documents, let me tell you, but at least it's time spent on a good cause. I think these reforms will make a real difference, Captain, and we couldn't have done it without you."
- Prisoner O'Brien: "There's still a chance that some of the right people might get away, and some of the wrong ones might end up paying for it. But I know what it's like to have your memories trifled with, and I won't ask anyone to let the Tal Shiar go poking around in their heads."
- Prisoner O'Brien: "The Klingons have a start here, a good one, and they'll keep working on it. If there's any way to guarantee justice without turning suspects over to the Romulans, I promise you we'll find it."
