Storyline
Announcement
The Augments have reported disturbing news: in one of their settlements, children are being born with Borg implants, even though their parents remain unassimilated. If the Borg have devised a way to assimilate individuals before they are even born, there is no telling just how many populations could be affected. Starfleet must find a way to counteract this insidious new threat before future generations are lost to the Collective. [2]
Prologue
- Icheb: "I was studying with the Augments when it happened, Captain. A child was born with Borg implants, and every child born since then has had them, too. Everyone has been nervous since the Borg invaded, but no one expected...this."
- Icheb: "The doctors don't know how they were assimilated, and most of their implants are resisting removal. The newborns have adaptive shielding, tissue regeneration–many of the same defenses that adult drones use."
- Icheb: "We have them contained, but even without maturation chambers they're developing quickly. If you'll help us find out how this happened, Captain, I recommend being careful around the drones. I know they look like infants, but they're still dangerous."
Intermezzo
- Arik Soong: "Interesting. The infants aren't the only ones infected with nanoprobes, Captain – they're merely the only ones showing signs of it. Every person in this settlement is infected except young Icheb. I'd say he has his remarkable genetics to thank for that."
- Arik Soong: "We're dealing with a new kind of nanoprobe here. It clearly doesn't require injection to enter the bloodstream, although adolescent or adult immune systems seem capable of shutting all the nanoprobes down. An embryo's immune system, though? Less fortunate."
- choice A
- Captain: "Any progress on treating the children?"
- Arik Soong: "So far, no, but they're in safe hands. My containment field has been adapting to their escape attempts. A couple decades of trying to break out of prison teaches you a few things about keeping people locked up."
- choice B
- Captain: "The Borg haven't attacked this sector. How could these people have been infected?"
- Arik Soong: "Captain, Captain, give the Borg some credit. Subtlety may not be their usual modus operandi, but that doesn't mean they're not capable of it. Even a small probe could've released something into the atmosphere or the water supply, whether we noticed it passing by or not."
- choice C
- Captain: "Why would the Borg target the Augments for something like this?"
- Arik Soong: "Why not? They're all about adding to their own perfection. 'Biological uniqueness,' etcetera. Don't take it personally, Captain, but my children and the rest of the Augments are much more unique than your average human. I can't blame them for taking an interest."
- Arik Soong: "Fascinating as it is, Borg technology isn't easy to wrap your head around, even for me. It's a good thing we have Unimatrix Zero on our side offering their expertise. Now that he's out of the Collective, Mister La Forge has been helping us work on a cure."
- Assimilated La Forge: "I think we can cure the children with time, but we have another problem. The nanoprobes are...adapting. Evolving, somehow. It could only be a matter of time before all of the adults are affected, too."
- Assimilated La Forge: "And what really worries me is the design of these things. Borg technology is advanced, but I've never seen anything like these nanoprobes, even while I was connected to the Collective. If the Borg didn't develop them, I don't know who did, but they can't be friendly."
Epilogue
- Icheb: "Soong and I combined your research with my DNA to make a cure, and it's working, Captain! All the adults have the nanoprobes out of their systems, and we've made enough progress treating the children that we can start removing their implants, too."
- Icheb: "I'm glad they'll be able to go home to their families. I just hope they'll stay safe. The Borg are always adapting–it's their way of life. Now that this assimilation method has failed, they'll only start working on another."
- Assimilated La Forge "Icheb's right. There's no telling what else the Borg have in store for us, and I'm still trying to find out where these nanoprobes came from. They seem to be Borg in origin, but they're not like any other Borg technology we've ever seen. I'll need more time to study them..."
