Storyline
Announcement
Nog, dressed for a night in Vic’s Lounge, notices heavy traffic in the holosuite enticed by a hologram named Minuet. This phenomenon isn’t limited to Deep Space Nine, reports are coming in from throughout Starfleet. Crew members are becoming attached and addicted to the holodecks, resulting in them abandoning their duties. Why is Minuet appearing so rapidly in so many simulations? Is there an insidious motive, or is it just a matter of holograms wanting love and companionship like anyone else? [1]
Prologue
- Tuxedo Nog: "Captain, I've heard you're skilled with delicate situations, so I hope you can help me. I've noticed a lot more people visiting my uncle's holosuites, including Starfleet officers, which makes him happy, but they aren't leaving. And Starfleet is feeling the loss of personnel."
- Lady Beverly: "Young man, it is only natural. As a member of Starfleet, you too must understand the stress and strife that battle brings to a weary soul. If they find the quenching calm of companionship here, then why should that be a problem?"
- Sheriff Worf: "It is indeed a problem. They are military officers with duties, lives, and families. If I must, I will happily run them out by force. And I'm certain the Hirogen will be glad to help."
- Tuxedo Nog: "Tough love may be our best option, but let's hope it won't be necessary. I've been in a similar situation before. I don't want to be insensitive, but Starfleet isn't exactly in a position to lose some of its finest in the realm of fantasy."
Intermission
- Tuxedo Nog: "This is worse than I thought. I knew things were bad here on Deep Space Nine, but it seems to be happening across the Federation. Not only that, a hologram named Minuet seems to be the common thread."
- Lady Beverly: "What is it about Minuet that troubles you? She simply wants what any of us want: love, companionship, and respect. Is that not what drives some from your side into the world of the holographic?"
- Tuxedo Nog: "I would like to believe this is all innocent. After all, Vic's always been so good to me. But the way Minuet's appearance coincides with these hologram addictions just seems suspicious. What do you think, Captain?"
- Choice A
- Captain: "Has this 'Minuet' hologram ever appeared before?"
- Sheriff Worf: "I can confirm that she appeared once on the Enterprise. She was a fabrication of Commander Riker's, though I'd prefer not to speculate on for what purpose. Her program was altered by the Bynars, but I am not certain what happened after that."
- Choice B
- Captain: "Is it really so strange for a hologram to show up in multiple simulations?"
- Tuxedo Nog: "Under normal circumstances, no. But the timing is too convenient to be pure coincidence. I think it's worth investigating, even if nothing comes of it."
- Choice C
- Captain: "A hologram seeking companionship? It feels so ironic."
- Lady Beverly: "Is it really that strange, Captain? Your kind has created us to learn, to meet your needs, to provide companionship. I feel it is only natural that we would come to crave that which we provide."
- Tuxedo Nog: "When Vic saw the holodeck was interfering with my life outside, he shut himself off rather than continue to indulge me, even if it meant he had to give up what he wanted. Whether Minuet means any harm or not, harm is what she's doing. Let's figure out what it is she wants."
Epilogue
- Tuxedo Nog: "Captain, thank you for giving this mission due diligence. My uncle and many of his colleagues are happy with the situation as it is. They only see the extra latinum these holodeck addicts bring in. But I can't accept it. Something just feels sinister about the whole thing."
- Minuet: "Lighten up, kid. What is this sinister game you think I'm playing? I'm seeking companionship, something more than playing virtual doll for everyone else's fantasies. That's not a crime, is it?"
- Tuxedo Nog: "It's hard not to be suspicious when your appearance coincides with all of these officers abandoning their duties. I suppose appearing in holodecks across the quadrant is just you playing the field?"
- Minuet: "'Correlation does not equal causation', am I right? I've learned a lot from your fellow Starfleet officers. I'm enjoying the time I spend with them. Maybe you should learn to enjoy yourself a little more."
