Storyline
Announcement
Having learned about celebrations of independence on ancient Earth such as Bastille Day and the former United States of America’s Independence Day, Kira would like to find a way to pay homage to Bajoran Independence. However, she admits that Bajoran celebrations have a reputation for being pious, quiet, and frankly, dull. She wants something that’s exciting, lively, and shows her people know how to enjoy the freedom they fought so hard and so long to achieve. Malcolm Reed has some ideas on how to celebrate from Earth’s past, while B’Elanna Torres insists that the warrior Klingons truly know how to let loose after a well-fought battle. [1]
Prologue
- Queen Guinevere Kira: "It's been so long since we Bajorans gained our independence from the Cardassians, and yet it feels like nothing has changed. The fighting just never seems to stop. The Dominion War, the temporal anomalies and all the resulting conflicts."
- Queen Guinevere Kira: "My people haven't had time to celebrate our freedom. But maybe we should stop waiting for a true peace. I've been reading about ancient celebrations on Earth–Bastille Day, Independence Day. They weren't somber and quiet rituals, like a lot of Bajoran festivals."
- Queen Guinevere Kira: "They were fun and exciting. Fireworks. Parades. Dancing. Food. Fun with the people that matter. We need something like that. To celebrate what we've overcome and to give us strength in moving forward."
- Queen Guinevere Kira: "So I've decided to create a Bajoran independence celebration, called 'Kosst Kejal'–to be free. But I could use your help, Captain. Just how can we create a Bajoran independence celebration that's fun and yet fitting for the Bajorans it's intended for?"
Intermission
- Queen Guinevere Kira: "Captain, this is great! Some of this is even new to me! Of course, I still can't shake some of what I read about celebrations on ancient Earth. I'm trying to figure out what I should include in 'Kosst Kejal' and how."
- Klingon Torres: "Ancient Earth celebrations? If you really want to celebrate what your people have achieved, you need to celebrate like Klingons do! I haven't always been comfortable with this side of me, but I find Klingon festivities cathartic. Your people need it."
- Tourist Reed: "Take cues from the Klingons and someone's likely to get killed. Now that Ancient Earth influence you mentioned is worth looking into. Make no mistake, we still know how to have a good time."
- Choice A
- Captain: "This is a Bajoran celebration. Stick with what you know."
- Queen Guinevere Kira: "I guess it is better to avoid going too far from what's comfortable. Ever since I proposed the idea of Kosst Kejal, I've been under scrutiny by both the Vedek Assembly and the Chamber of Ministers. They've called it blasphemous and fear it may incite violence."
- Choice B
- Captain: "'Kosst Kejal?' I say 'Kosst Qapla!'"
- Klingon Torres: "Cute. But yes, I definitely think you should take some inspiration from Klingon culture. Nothing expresses cultural pride like a good Klingon opera! And sharing a blood pie after a hard-fought battle?"
- Choice C
- Captain: "I have to be honest, I'm biased toward a good old-fashioned Earth party."
- Tourist Reed: "Right! Parades, fireworks, entertainment, and good food! No one does it better than we do back home!"
- Queen Guinevere Kira: "If 'Kosst Kejal' is actually going to happen, I suppose we better get to it and pull this thing together."
Epilogue
- Tourist Reed: "Nicely done, Major Kira. I have to say, the parade you organized rivalled the 'Trooping of Colors' ceremonies I remember from my youth on Earth. Even the Vedeks and Ministers seemed to enjoy the pomp."
- Queen Guinevere Kira: "I can't argue with that, though being treated so highly certainly seems to appeal to them. Honestly the whole thing felt a little bit much to me, but everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves."
- Queen Guinevere Kira: "We'll have to do it again next year, but I think we can tone down all the ceremony and parades and pyrotechnics a bit. It all felt just a bit silly too me for something that's supposed to commemorate an historic moment like Bajoran Independence."
- Tourist Reed: "I'll leave it up to you, Major. Just know that sometimes, 'silly' is exactly what people need."
