Storyline
Announcement
A disease is spreading across the Xindi homeworld, infecting the refugee Founders and Xindi alike. It resembles the morphogenic virus that once nearly wiped out the Founders, but it is attacking the Xindi with the same agonizing, degenerative symptoms despite their solid nature. As more and more are infected by the day, both factions have set aside their history with Starfleet and requested its aid, unwilling to face the threat of extinction alone. [2]
Intermezzo
- Odo: "If you were hoping for good news, I'll have to disappoint you. This disease was no accident, and with the Link connecting us, most of my people are infected, Laas and myself included. At least I'm still well enough to speak... As for the Xindi, Degra has found something unusual."
- Councilor Degra: "This virus was deliberately designed to target both Changelings and Xindi, but what's most interesting is that it was made to infect all Xindi except for Avians. It's a strange oversight considering that our Avian brothers have been extinct for centuries."
- choice A
- Captain: "If the Avians are extinct, how do you know this virus wouldn't affect them as well?"
- Councilor Degra: "They may be gone, but we have always honored their memory. Our Council has several of their bones, and when we extracted some of their DNA, the results were clear. Avian tissue is immune to the same virus that is killing the rest of us."
- choice B
- Captain: "Extinct doesn't mean what it used to these days. There could be living Avians."
- Odo: "That was my thought as well, but none of Degra's people have heard from them. Neither have any of the Dominion's worlds in the Gamma Quadrant. Just because we haven't found one doesn't mean they aren't out there, though. They could be in hiding."
- choice C
- Captain: "Odo, where do your people come into this?"
- Odo: "It's common knowledge that my people are relying on the Xindi's hospitality these days. If someone wanted to infect the Xindi without getting close to one themselves, we'd be an easy solution."
- Councilor Degra: "I believe the virus was made by an Avian seeking revenge. Long ago, our civil war wiped out the rest of its people, and however this Avian survived, it wants us to share their fate. Our only hope of finding a cure is to find the last Avian who made it."
Aftermath
- Councilor Degra: "I grew up hearing stories of the long-lost Avians as a child. To think that I've actually seen one now...what remarkable times we live in. We found it hiding in a nebula deep within the Delphic Expanse, and what's more, we've found a cure."
- Councilor Degra: "Our Council pleaded with the Avian for our people's lives. When I told it that wiping us out would make it the last Xindi—the last of all the Xindi—in the galaxy, the thought of being so alone was too much to bear. It agreed to help us cure the disease it had created."
- Laas: "I know what it is like to think you are the only one of your kind. This Avian may have caused great pain, but it is suffering from a loneliness I cannot begin to describe. I've offered to help it search for other Avians once my people are well again."
- Odo: "Everyone is suddenly so eager to work together when their lives are on the line. Maybe this will remind the Xindi that they are still one people, even if some prefer to fly or swim. It should help me remind my people that all solids aren't as bad they'd like to think."
