Storyline
Announcement
The Doctor sends out a communique narrating a harrowing tale in which crew have become trapped in the holodeck while playing through the sequel to his first holonovel. It seems he has lost his grip on reality, could this be tied to the frequent appearance of the Minuet hologram? [1]
Prologue
- Author Doctor: "Light years away from the world they once called home, the crew of the Voyager sets out to indulge in the one redemptive piece of high culture granted them by the cosmos–the long-awaited sequel to Photons Be Free."
- Author Doctor: "But it seems their enlightenment has been short-lived, for they have become trapped in the holodeck, prisoners of the very machines they designed to entertain them. What will become of them? Is there not a hero to save them?"
- Commander Barclay: "I can't access the EMH from here to shut him down. Something's wrong. He's seized control of the holodeck. And it seems that somehow, Minuet has made an appearance in the holonovel as well, despite no previous record of her in Voyager's holodecks. This can't be a coincidence."
- Gloria: "That could be, but I ask that you still approach this situation with some levity. Captain, have you read Photons Be Free? This man, hologram or not, is clearly a sensitive soul crying out for help. Rescue Voyager's crew, but please do it without going in, guns blazing."
Intermission
- Commander Barclay: "Voyager's crew is safe, Captain, thanks in large part to your efforts. Now all that's left is to repair the holonovel and the Doctor–"
- Author Doctor: "What do we have here? It seems our intrepid artist must once again fight the societal ills of censorship, the weapon of the close-minded, this time wielded by a gaggle of low-brow neanderthals from Starfleet who wouldn't know quality fiction if it hit them in the face."
- Author Doctor: "I don't think he took very kindly to our messing around inside his holonovel."
- Choice A
- Captain: "Doctor, I know you didn't mean for things to get out of hand. We're here to help."
- Author Doctor: "I don't believe I asked for your help. I'll thank you to save your unwelcome criticism for the wide release."
- Choice B
- Captain: "Doctor, by any chance, have you heard of a hologram named Minuet?"
- Author Doctor: "Minuet, the beautiful muse who encouraged me to continue telling my story in spite of all these naysayers? Yes, I know who she is. She has an eye for quality art and said my story would be a cornerstone of hologram history, a classic in the vein of Shakespeare."
- Choice C
- Captain: "Doctor, I need you to stand down. I don't want to destroy your holonovel."
- Author Doctor: "Captain, please, I thought we had an understanding. Destroying his novel is in effect silencing him, invalidating his voice. Surely we can solve this conflict, and the greater issue at hand, without dismissing these holographic lifeforms?"
- Gloria: "We cannot leave him like this, but I'm sure that we can fix his programming while still respecting him as an individual and treating him with dignity. In the end, I think that's all these holograms really want."
Epilogue
- Author Doctor: "Captain, I guess I owe you my thanks for bringing me back to my senses. I've been under a lot of stress, trying to finish this sequel. I know holonovels are just entertainment to you, but to me, they're the only way I can truly express myself."
- Commander Barclay: "Captain, I owe you my thanks as well. Doctor, we understand. I hope there are no hard feelings. It's so fascinating to think of a hologram writing their own holonovel, though I suspect that most living holonovel authors might feel a tad threatened."
- Gloria: "But what a gift a holonovel can be for bridging the gap between humans and holograms. Through The Doctor's work, we can try to understand life as a hologram. Perhaps if this kind of understanding took place throughout the galaxy, we might find a solution to the current crisis."
- Author Doctor: "We can only hope. Oh, by the way, Captain, how did you like my sophomore effort?"
