The Akritirian Job: Bajoran Faction Missions

Storyline

The Akritirian security facility has appeared in the Alpha Quadrant, and as has only been recently discovered, the Akritirians have been quietly imprisoning anyone they believe to have broken their laws. Innocent citizens of the Federation, Klingon Empire, and the Bajorans are believed to be among them, and these powers will not stand for their people being unjustly imprisoned. Representatives from each faction with some prior experience with incarceration are leading efforts to infiltrate the Akritirian security facility and see these citizens freed.[1]

Conclusion

The following was sent via in-game mail on January 20, 2017.

The Akritiran security facility that once held Tom Paris and Harry Kim hostage appeared in the Alpha Quadrant, and the Akritirians quietly set to work arresting anyone who violated their stringent laws, even unkonwingly. By the time Starfleet received word of this, the Akritirians had locked up people from hundreds of different planets, insisting that they were carrying out justice. Always seeking a diplomatic route, the Federation did what it could to ease the prisoners' time in lockup while it worked to negotiate their release. Meanwhile, the Klingons refused to let their people remain in custody, working both inside and out of the facility to help many prisoners escape. The Bajorans, experienced in harassing entrenched enemies, set about making the Akritirian guards lives as difficult as possible to convince them that keeping the prisoners was not worth the effort.

The Federation was able to get much-needed supplies and medical treatment to the prisoners, helping them weather the threats of hunger, thirst, and paranoia during their captivity. They were even able to provide counseling and establish a truce among many of the prisoners, until nearly all of them were either rescued or released.

While negotiating the release of the last remaining prisoners, however, the Federation received some shocking news. It had been able to convince the Akritirians that their prisoners were innocent when arrested, but while inside, two of these prisoners committed crimes in order to survive. The Akritirians had undeniable proof. However, hoping to regain some respect in the quadrant, they agreed to pardon and release one—and only one—of the two remaining prisoners: Pavel Chekov or Travis Mayweather.

The Federation ultimately asked the Akritirians to release Pavel Chekov. He was cleared to return to duty after several days of medical treatment, but he eagerly took Dr. McCoy's recommendation that take some shore leave. Two days later, the Enterprise received an urgent message from a Risian resort. Chekov had begun lashing out at other tourists, claiming they were after him, and the Enterprise quickly made its way there to recover their navigator. Medical examination revealed abnormally high levels of acetylcholine in his system—the same neurotransmitter used by the Akritirians' clamps to drive their prisoners to kill one another.

Despite Chekov's clamp being gone, his system was exhibiting its effects tenfold, and Starfleet began receiving similar reports of other former prisoners. If the effects were not reversed soon, they would become fatal. Voyager's EMH claimed he was best equipped to treat this condition, given that he developed the procedure to remove the clamps. On the other hand, Dr. Noonian Soong suggested that his knowledge of neural pathways made him the best candidate.

Dr. Soong was chosen to treat the afflicted prisoners, and he quickly set about studying the neurochemical imbalances in their brains. He eventually found that prisoners who were under extreme stress while wearing the clamps had developed a hypothalamic feedback loop that was imitating the clamp's effects. Unfortunately, the only treatment for this was a week-long process. He was able to treat the less severe cases effectively, but patients who were already in the early stages of irreversible cortical deterioration did not have that much time. Forced to resort to creative measures, Dr. Soong transferred each dying patient's consciousness to a positronic matrix. He has not yet developed a way to implant these occupied matrices into bodies—android or otherwise—but in the meantime, the patients' consciousnesses remain dormant but intact. What will be their ultimate fate? Only time will tell.
