Storyline
Announcement
The Sphere-Builders have swayed the Xindi to their cause, particularly the Insectoids, who bear much of the responsibility (and a lot of guilt) for the destruction of Xindus and the extinction of the Avians. The Xindi are willing to defy the Federation for the chance at a timeline where they were not party to genocide, and the Federation must work as a whole to convince the Xindi that standing together and learning from our mistakes will lead to a better future than selfishly chasing personal absolution. [1]
Prologue
- Bridge Officer Troi: "It seems the Sphere Builders have forged an alliance with the Xindi, particularly the Insectoids. They've used the promise of altering the timeline to prevent the destruction of Xindus in order to gain their loyalty."
- Humbled Archer: "They haven't learned a damn thing, then. Allying themselves with a species who puppeteered them once before. Do they really think they can erase the past so easily? Or that doing it at other species' expense is right?"
- Bridge Officer Troi: "I understand your frustration with the situation, Captain Archer. I'm aware of your history with them. But I can't fathom what the pain of carrying such a heavy burden as being directly responsible for the destruction of your homeworld and one of its primary species."
- Demora Sulu: "You can worry about blame and pain later. Sensors indicate the Xindi Insectoid ship is bound for Earth. Captain, can we count on you to head them off?"
Intermission
- Etana Jol: "So this is how the mighty Federation handles its conflicts? By blowing up the opposing force's ships! So much for your treasured diplomacy, your talks of peace and acceptance!"
- Humbled Archer: "I don't want to hear about immorality from you. You're Ktarian military, your people are members of the Federation! And yet you're out here undermining us in every way possible. Maybe you're the one who needs to get her priorities in order."
- Demora Sulu: "Agreed. And I doubt the Xindi had anything on their minds but carrying out whatever their mission was for the Sphere Builders. But what about you, Etana Jol? You're certainly convinced what you're doing is right in some way."
- Choice A
- Captain: "Why did the Sphere Builders want you?"
- Etana Jol: "Captain, my talents are well-known throughout the galaxy, to the right people, of course. I have a rather desirable poker face and a wit to match. And I feel I have been rather effective in my efforts. It's nothing personal, of course. Just business."
- Choice B
- Captain: "Are you the only Ktarian working with the Sphere Builders?"
- Etana Jol: "The only Ktarian? No, of course not. Much of my crew hails from the same homeworld. But, Captain, what? Do you believe this is some sort of Ktarian conspiracy? What would our leaders think if they heard a Starfleet officer speak of them with such suspicion?"
- Choice C
- Captain: "Why did the Sphere Builders enlist the Xindi?"
- Etana Jol: "Why do you think? Familiarity, maybe. But if your precious Earth were blown up and one of your primary species destroyed, would you not give anything to get it back?"
- Bridge Officer Troi: "You look upon Starfleet and the Federation with such contempt, Etana. So why did you go to all of the trouble to contact us in the first place?"
- Etana Jol: "Well, I thought I might do you a favor and point out how foolish you all are if you think that contingent of Xindi was the only one you had to worry about. There are still plenty of Xindi working on the Sphere Builders' behalf."
Epilogue
- Demora Sulu: "Commendable work, Captain. Talks are proceeding with the Xindi and Etana Jol and the Sphere Builders are silent for the moment. At least we can breathe a sigh of relief for once."
- Humbled Archer: "I wouldn't count on them staying that way. It's frustrating to think about. Changing the timeline affects us all. To think that any faction would take that risk, no matter what the perceived reward was. I just don't get it."
- Bridge Officer Troi: "For some, their darker emotions can cloud their judgement. Anger, desire for revenge, or, in the case of the Xindi, intense guilt. They lose the ability to perceive the consequences of their actions in their quest to alleviate their pain."
- Humbled Archer: "Regardless of the motivation, we can't continue with this threat hanging over our heads. And I have a feeling we haven't heard the last of Etana Jol either."
