Storyline
Announcement
Much of the Federation’s resources have been dedicated to solving the temporal anomaly crisis, while scientific advancement for its own sake has fallen by the wayside. To ensure that such work continues, the Daystrom Institute has announced a special competition for this year’s Daystrom Award, given to those who make remarkable scientific discoveries. In addition to the usual prestige, the winners will receive resources and even funding (for those whose societies require currency). The Institute hopes to remind the galaxy that even in a crisis, knowledge and discovery are as important as ever - but with so many brilliant minds entering the competition, whose discoveries will most impress the Institute? [1]
Prologue
- Leonardo da Vinci: "You live in strange and wondrous times, Captain. I expected this to be an era of great discoveries, but every world seems more preoccupied with the temporal disturbances that brought me here than with science. An establishment called the Daystrom Institute hopes to change this."
- Leonardo da Vinci: "They are hosting a contest to rekindle lost scientific curiosity! Some beings called the Ferengi are sponsoring inventors like myself, though they insist upon claiming any valuable patents. The Bajorans favor the study of time itself for reasons of religious significance."
- Leonardo da Vinci: "The last sponsors, a curious group called the Augments, have expressed an interest in the field of medicine. Some of their ideas are most unusual, but I promise you this: whoever wins, the discoveries we make will benefit generations to come!"
Epilogue
- Commander Chapel: "There you are, Captain. I wanted to thank you for sponsoring so much medical research. Because of your help, my colleagues and I have made discoveries that could save countless lives in years to come. There's always more to learn, but it's a fine start."
- Commander Chapel: "It's easy to focus on a patient's quality of life in peaceful times, but when times are hard and lives are at stake, it's difficult to see past the imminent dangers. That's what the temporal anomaly crisis has done to all of us."
- Commander Chapel: "This competition was a reminder that it's still important to think beyond the anomaly crisis. I believe there is a better future out there for all of us, no matter how far away. And I'll do everything that I can to make sure we get to see it."
