You can use your Ship Scanner to discover usable salvage or constellations in the system you're in. The salvage varies, depending on if the system you're scanning in is occupied by one of the factions. For example, it's more likely that you will receive a Bajoran transmission when you scan in a system occupied by Bajorans. You also can find items, tied to the owner of the system.
The first scan per day is free, scans after this cost Interstellar Medium (ISM). After the first free scan or paid scan, a subsequent scan can be performed by watching an advert if available; although a scan performed in this way does not cost any ISM itself, it still counts towards the number of scans performed in terms of determining the cost of the next scan.
Every time you scan, there is a chance that you may discover a Constellation. Constellations are used for Crew Retrieval The first time you scan the probability of discovering a constellation is 1%. The chance increases by 2% for each unsuccessful scan. If a scan is successful and you discover a constellation, the probability is reset back to 1% for the next scan.

When scanning, you can find various amounts of the following: Credits, Components (any rarity), Equipment (any rarity), Ship Schematics (1 to 10), Transmissions (usually one).
You can't acquire Crew members, Merits or Dilithium when scanning.
- Constellations were introduced on 9 February 2021.
- Before 9 February 2021 the scanner had a cooldown of 3 hours. All scans were free, and a second scan could be performed immediately after watching an advert. Players with VIP Level 2, could speed up the timer by spending Dilithium. The amount depended on the time left.
- Before 9 February 2021 three scans per day were needed to complete Daily Missions. This was reduced to one a day.
