Storyline
Announcement
After weeks of throwing up defenses against the Borg, the Federation finally has a chance to go on the offensive. A crashed Borg cube may hold the key to sending the Borg fleet back to the Delta Quadrant, if Starfleet can pinpoint its weaknesses in time. [2]
Prologue
- The Borg Queen: "We have waited long enough to assimilate the Alpha Quadrant. It is time that your biological and technological distinctiveness be added to our own. Your resistance only delays the inevitable."
- The Borg Queen: "I know Starfleet's defenses are weak. There is no need to struggle. Embrace assimilation, and your pain and fragility will be stripped away. You will be one with us. You will be perfect."
- Admiral Picard: "Let me assure you, Captain, that we have no intention of surrendering to the Borg. We may be stretched thin, but I've just received news that could turn the tide in our favor. Starfleet has located the wreckage of a Borg cube on Altair III."
- Admiral Picard: "Based on our long-range scans, it appears inoperational. This may be the best chance we'll have to study their ships' weaknesses inside and out. More Borg vessels are likely on their way–gather as much data as you can before they arrive."
Intermezzo
- Riley Frazier: "This is the Achilles' heel we've been looking for, Captain: the ship's vinculum. Every Borg ship relies on a vinculum to connect its drones to the Collective, to keep them all linked to one another."
- Riley Frazier: "The Collective may have its drones to plan and adapt, but we have Unimatrix Zero on our side. They've been resisting the Borg ever since they were freed, and Janeway thinks we can use this vinculum to our advantage."
- Assimilated Janeway: "This is the first chance we've had to study a relatively intact vinculum up close. It'll take some experimentation, but if we can develop an energy pulse to target Borg vinculums, even through their shields, we could disconnect every drone in the fleet from the Collective."
- choice A
- Captain: "Elaborate. What would disconnecting all of its drones mean for the Borg fleet?"
- Riley Frazier: "In a word? Chaos. When my old ship was cut off from the Collective, it was... frightening. Painful. Being alone in my own head with my memories rushing back... I was able to cope, but many of the others couldn't. The bottom line is, none of them will be in any state to fight."
- choice B
- Captain: "You've both been linked to the Collective. Why haven't you tried this before?"
- Assimilated Janeway: "We have, actually. Starfleet has been looking for ways to destroy Borg vinculums since the invasion began. But knowing about their existence from our time in the Collective, even having some knowledge of their design, is no substitute for having one to test firsthand."
- choice C
- Captain: "Why not just destroy the ships instead of disabling their drones?"
- Riley Frazier: "I'm sure you've seen by now just how hard they are to destroy. Even if you damage them, they're capable of repairing themselves at speeds Starfleet weapons can't match. If we tried to wipe out their whole fleet, we'd lose. But we can leave them dead in the water."
- Assimilated Janeway: "I'm confident we can develop a pulse capable of disabling a vinculum. The hard part will be finding a power source for it, something strong enough to penetrate vinculums' shields. I've been going through some old Starfleet records, and I have an idea about where to look..."
Epilogue
- The Borg Queen: "My other ships...my drones...all silent. How clever, Captain. You are more resilient than we anticipated. You may have delayed us for now, but your time will come. In the end, all resistance is futile."
- Admiral Picard: "Sensor readings are coming in: she has opened a transwarp conduit back to the Delta Quadrant. We've done it! The Alpha Quadrant is safe, for now."
- Admiral Picard: "We have orders to dismantle the remnants of the Borg fleet and learn what we can from them. Adapt. As for the former drones...I can tell you that rehabilitation is no easy process. They have a long way to go before they might be themselves again. But at least there is hope."
- choice A
- Captain: "I only wish we'd stopped the Borg sooner. We could have saved more lives."
- Admiral Picard: "We would've lost far more without your help. I know it's difficult to cope with the devastation of an enemy like the Borg, but we must find a way to keep on living while we mourn those we've lost. And while we prepare."
- choice B
- Captain: "If the Borg return, I have another lesson or two I'd like to teach them..."
- Admiral Picard: "Be careful what you wish for, Captain. I am not making light of your contributions when I say that we were lucky. They've already adapted to the most powerful weapon we could construct. Any future engagements will cost us–and we will certainly see them again."
- choice C
- Captain: "We're lucky to be alive after all that chaos. I'm looking forward to shore leave."
- Admiral Picard: "You've certainly earned it, Captain. Once your ship and your people are back on their feet, I'm sure Starfleet will have a very generous amount of leave waiting for you. But I'd warn you not to grow too comfortable while on holiday."
- Admiral Picard: "The technology the Borg subjected us to is like nothing I've ever seen from them before. Children born with implants, nanoprobes that can infect the very air we breathe...They may have even worse horrors in store by the next time we meet. We must remain vigilant, Captain."
- Admiral Picard: "For now, however, I think it's fair to take pride in what we've accomplished. Our people are safe. The Federation will go on. That is a victory worth celebrating."
