The Klingons send your crew to speak with other nearby species to learn if biowarfare is a tactic used by the Gorn before. It takes some convincing, but some of the neighboring species talk to your crew in spite of their reluctance and reveal that so far, the Gorn have not employed biowarfare against them. Your crew tries to contact other nearby species who've had run-ins with the Hegemony, but they do not trust the Federation and soon your prying also earns the ire of the Gorn.

Your crew struggle to convince the Gorn that you are not here to help the Klingons invade, but finally you manage to show that your intentions are good. An early antibiotic given to treat the illness is backfiring in many, causing a rapid evolution in the bacterium and giving rise to a strain resistant to the original antibiotic. The medical research team asks for your help in finding a solution. Your medical officers manage to create a stronger version of the initial medicine and administer it to those who are in the early stages. They work up a new prototype for those with the resistant strain. Your medical officers attempt to synthesize a stronger version of the original antibiotic, but it is not enough to combat the new, resistant strain.
