Joran's attempt to bring the Borg onboard with his group - by insisting he can bring joined Trill (and their accumulated knowledge) into the Collective - only earns their ire. Their violent response is causing severe collateral damage. Intervene. Your away team helps to evacuate as many nearby bystanders as possible before engaging Joran and the Borg head-on. Once Joran disengages, the Borg finally stop their attack. Your away team attempts to talk the Borg down, but your vessel is struck by Joran and your crew is forced to take evasive action.

A joined Trill host who was assimilated passes away and the Symbiosis Commission asks for your help with joining the symbiont to the next host without the Borg components. Extracting the nanoprobes and implants from the little symbiont proves a challenging ordeal, but your away team manages it and the symbiont is safely implanted in a new host. Removing nanoprobes from the symbiont proves too much and the symbiont dies before it can be transplanted.

Former Borg drones feel some sense of empathy for those Trill who have experienced the feeling of loss from hosting on a temporary basis. They ask your help in investigating a way to address that emptiness - for former drones and former hosts alike. Your away team interviews drones and some temporary hosts, and while no concrete solutions have been found, some of the commonalities your team has identified offer a great deal of hope. After one of the former hosts is implanted with nanoprobes to "alleviate their hollowness" and begins acting erratically, your away team is sent away.

However, he has not been able to reconnect with the family in fifty years. He asks you to find them. Going on what the Trill gave you, your team quickly learns the Klingon family in question is a controversial topic. The last descendants left Qo'noS in disgrace, but your team is able to track them down and reunite them with the Trill. Emperor Georgiou, on hearing of the plight of Joran's group, brushes it off, since a once joined Trill can't live long without their symbiont. Bashir wonders if there isn't some way to change that.
