There are concerns that this escort mission to a black hole could be politically motivated, that Starfleet could be playing a hand in the execution of some political target, for example. Pike asks you to ensure this isn't the case.
Looking into the Pupaian to be escorted, you find the opposite — that he is highly regarded and that many of the Pupaians are reluctant to see him depart, but he wishes to make this penultimate voyage to the next life.
While trying to gather details about the Pupaian, your away team ends up offending several of the Pupaian elders.

While comparing the star charts you receive from the Pupaians with existing Starfleet ones, Spock points out that the Pupaians' path overlaps with already contested territory and asks you to look into it.
Your team investigates and confirms other species have lain recent claims to territory the Pupaians claim has been theirs for centuries. While seeking long-term solutions, for the present, you help bolster Pupaian ships so they can travel safely.
While investigating the contested boundaries, your away team is attacked by another faction and forced to flee.

In order to learn more about the Pupaians, a request is made for any relevant documentation, only to be flooded with millennia of records, which Section 31 tasks your team with going through.
Your away team devises a program that categorizes the information they've been given and pinpoints events and topics that appear most so they can focus on what's most relevant before passing the rest on to the Starfleet School of Xenoanthropology.
Your away team starts going through the records in chronological order. They're still going through the records in chronological
order.

In order to assist with escorting the Pupaian, Maxwell Forrest requests any useful data from the previously incomplete voyages. But between religious edict and damaged equipment, he is unable to secure any, and so enlists your help.
Your team is able to convince Pupaian leaders of the need to review the data. In exchange, you agree to destroy it once you have gained any necessary information. You repair the damaged equipment and disseminate the intel before following through.
Pupaian leadership is insulted that you would ask and furthermore, they do not believe you can recover the data from damaged equipment and tightly encrypted transmissions. When they give you a transmission as a test, your failure proves them right.

While many are excited that the Pupaians reached out, Luther Sloane is suspicious. How did the Pupaians learn of the Federation? Why reach out now? Why not sooner? Those are answers he tasks you with finding.
Through talking to various Pupaians and doing a little unauthorized probing of their data, your away team confirms the desire to connect had been there for a while, but the urgency of the situation finally pushed the Pupaians outside of their cocoons.
While trying to hack into a Pupaian database, a member of your away team is caught. The Pupaians are furious.

An outbreak of poisonings near Pupaian territory prompts Emperor Georgiou to send your team to investigate.
Your away team learns the poisonings trace back to a couple of Breen traders who stole vials of medicine from a Pupaian ship that they then learned were poisonous to other species, which they used accordingly. You confiscate the remaining vials.
Though your team has found no concrete answers, one of your away team members becomes ill while docked at an outpost and is rushed to sickbay.

Seven of Nine has raised concerns about how navigational functions will continue as escort ships near the black hole and asks your away team to investigate.
Evaluating data from other black holes, your away team makes upgrades and alterations to ship navigational sensors and communication signals to function as close to the event horizon as possible.
While attempting to upgrade navigational equipment, a member of your team makes a critical error and now the ship is unable to locate its position within space.

Luther Sloane gets word of Pupaian goods showing up at trade posts across the galaxy, but not sold or authorized by the Pupaians. He asks you to investigate.
Your away team tracks the influx of Pupaian robes and goods and finds they are being sold by an Orion mercenary who would attack Pupaian ships and steal anything that looked valuable. You confront him and take him into custody.
Your away team confronts various merchants, all of whom quickly shut you out. When you return to your shuttle, you find it has been badly damaged.
